As a Baby Boomer, I grew up in the '60s and '70s finishing up college in the '80s. Occasionally I like to share some nostalgia. Novelty songs are seldom serious music, but what they have going for them is fun or, perhaps, a bit of a shock factor. This type of music isn't unique to any time period. Novelty songs have existed since the time that we first began recording music and they continue to this day. In the '70s, Monty Python, Dr. Demento, Weird Al Yankovic, Ray Stevens, and Jim Stafford provided many novelty tunes, but there were others that hit it big with this genre as well. While we may not think of these tunes as the best music of the '70s, '60s or any other time period, they have hit and stayed on the charts in many instances.

Just about any musician, or any piece of music, can make it to the top of the charts today. All it technically takes is millions of YouTube streams. Which means some unlikely stuff can reach the peak. But underdogs and oddity sitting atop the Billboard chart is nothing new. In fact, we would argue the s, s and s offered a more unpredictable pop field. After all, can you imagine an instrumental TV theme being the top song in America today? Or a dance version of a Beethoven symphony? How about German acts with only six English words? All of this happened and hit big in the s, which is part of what made the decade such a colorful time.
This is a creation of my friend Doug, who has thrown a 70s party every year for eleven years that is always a huge hit. Note: not all of these are cheesy songs; we put many iconic seventies songs on the playlist as well. Cheesiest songs of the 70s — Fabulous! Do you have a similar list for the 80s, probably the worst decade for music…. Geez, tough crtic.
